Cotton and Chick Watts Blackface Minstrel Show Comedy

– Now two quiet people,
Cotton Watts and Chick. – Lay there, Lay there, Lay there,
let that be a lesson to you. – What the matter with you boy, shooting up that man’s hen house? – I’ll shoot any chicken
trying to follow me home. – Well why don’t you get
a job and go to work? – I almost had me a job this morning. – Where? – I went down to the post
office and asked that man could he let me have one of
them jobs as a letter toter. – No, Cotton, you mean a mail carrier. – Then the man said before
he could give me a situation he’d have to put me through
a simple syrup examinoution. – No stupid, you mean a
civil service examination. – The man kept me in a little
ole room, and sat me down and started asking me a gang of questions. – Well, what’d he ask you? – First the man asked me, he said, how far is it from the sun to the moon? – He asked you how far it
was from the sun to the moon? – Yeah, that’s what the man asked me. – Well, what’d you tell him? – I told him if he was
gonna give me that route, I didn’t want the job. (laughter) – Now tell me, how would you
like to go to work for me? – Yes ma’am. How much you gonna pay me, I hope? – Well let’s see now, I’ll
pay you all you’re worth. – No ma’am. I gotta have some money. – You know, Cotton, I’m making a picture called the Lion Tamer. – The Lion Tamer?
– Uh-huh. – There ain’t but one kind
of lion I’ll mess with. – What kind’s that? – Whoooo! That’s a dandelion. (laughter) – Now all I want you to do is meet me at the zoo in
the morning at nine o’clock. – Yeah with the rest of the monkeys? – With the rest of the monkeys. – I’ll bring my grandpa with me. – I want to get a moving picture
of you in the lion’s cage. – Well if you ever do get a
picture of me in a lion’s cage, it’ll be moving alright. – Aw Cotton, the lion can’t hurt you. – Can’t hurt me? I know but he make me hurt myself. – Why, the lion’s tame. He’ll eat right off your hand. – Eat off of your hand? And off of your leg too, I know them cats. – But you don’t understand Cotton, the lion was raised on milk. – Raised on milk? I was too, but I eat pork chops now. – Why, it can’t bite you. – How come he can’t bite me? – He hasn’t got a tooth in his head. – I know but he can gum me to death. I don’t want him gnawing on me. – Now all I want to do is snap you as you enter the lion’s cage. – You just want to snap me as I enter? – Yes. – Well you better snap me as I enter, ’cause you will never be able
to focus me when I start out, ’cause I’m Alabama bound. (swing music)

  1. I like the white king on the throne watching the black face dance and shuk. Crazy vid good dance moves

  2. YouTube kicks off (demonized) crowder but allows this?! I think there a comes a point when we don’t need it all on here.

  3. Ha Xb kinda funnies 2 bad the time period was cruel and unreasonable in structure such humour would make goood bites blaming the past is pointless though better 2 realise things placed 2 day might get loooked back on as lesser or humans being human still doesn't explain why peoples relate this 2 now though comes off self serving and unempathetic 2 those of the past that lived through it and those that sacrificed status or distance 4 understanding with reason Hmmm6_6 kinda nice

  4. I know this video is cringe worthy as they come. And we have a duty to judge the past generations harshly for this outrage. However, no matter whether you be black or white, I would like to bring up the fact that future generations WILL JUDGE US ALL just as harshly for our inhumane treatment of nonhuman animals suffering tremendously within the confines of factory farms! They will look back and wonder just how on earth so many people could sit idly by, while so much horrific suffering is allowed to go unabated against kind, social and intelligent animals such as pigs? Rationalized only by the statement ‘well I like to eat bacon’. I’m sure the people in this video also liked feeling superior to an entire race of people. That doesn’t make it right or correct. And just because someone ‘likes to eat bacon’, neither does that justify the reprehensible cruelty occurring this very moment in our nations factory farms. History will not judge us kindly! We need to be more aggressive in recognizing this and putting and end to such practices if we wish to move forward as an enlightened compassionate society!

  5. him: how much you gonna pay me

her: i’ll pay you your worth

him: i have to have some money

me just now understanding it smh

  6. This film was made in 1951, but as the story goes, it is meant to depict flashbacks to the "old days" of Blackface/Minstrel Shows. In other words, even by 1951, this brand of "humor" had already fallen out of fashion. The writer/director/producer, Ron Ormond, was known for schlock/ b/ exploitation films. Thank goodness times have changed.

  7. Ah minstrel shows, back when whites would merely mock blacks instead of shooting up walmarts and bars in El Paso, Dayton and many other places

  8. America came a long ways of raceism. Some of the jokes are funny but we have to think how far this country came and keep being better because at the end we are all God's children no matter what race we are.

  9. God…..damn… Whats more messed up than the routine itself are the few REAL black dudes in the background who absolutely have to smile and pretend this isnt messed up. Particularly, the guy in the far right on the tight shots. Kinda like that propaganda film hitler made of the people in the concentration camps smiling as if they actually liked it there.

  10. Isnt it funny that its always blacks and whites doing this racial stuff according to the media??? No other race is doing this. Seriously. It looks very storybook like.

  11. I found much of this to be hilarious. When I was little I didn't think "blackface" was even black people. I thought they were just funny clowns.

  12. There's something so demonic about these blackface shows. I'm so glad they died out. But unfortunately, there's still modern day variations of black face. Watching these opens my eyes and mind to only snippets of this ugly history and what our ancestors had to endure. It's so saddening.

  13. Just reading half these comments…
Peace to the gods, known n unknown. Double honor to the ancestors(all of em) for going thru their trials, to get us here. May we learn from our mistakes.
    Keep laughing at evil…

  14. FOR MANY MANY YEARS THE PHILADELPHIA MUMMERS PARADE COMIC DIVISION WERE ALL IN BLACK FACE. NO ONE BUT NO ONE SAID A WORD. AS A SMALL BOY IN THE EARLY FORTIES WHEN ONE OF THESE MUMMERS CAME UP TO ME IN BLACK FACE SMELLING LIKE HE JUST DRANK A GALLON OF BOOZE I TRULY DID"NT FIND IT FUNNY. IT STARTED MANY YEARS BEFORE THAT. BUT I THINK TODAY THERE IS TO TO MUCH SENSITIVITY. I PRAY THEY NEVER FIND A PICTURE OF PRESIDENT TRUMP. IMPEACH NOTHING THE DEMORATS WILL HAVE HIM HUNG.

  15. I don't find this video funny at all it's actually 🌽. But I'm glad videos like this do exist. To show how evil these people were in those times.

  16. This guy is really talented. I remember watching this many years ago back in school and it's still hilarious today 😄 Thanks for uploading! But does anybody know what happened to his lips?. I noticed that a lot of black people in these older films had very "white" lips. Is it vitiligo?

  18. That whiteman doing the mestrual show , was a fan of the black race, with those dance moves he really wanted to be black at heart.

  19. Yessum Ma'am youze aint going to get me in the Big Cats cage and they eat over my legs two I know the way of them Cats.
